The Well 52: Dr. Andrew Gillihan

Tell us a little bit about yourself...
I am the owner & treating physical therapist of Alinea Performance Cincinnati. I love lifting weights and training BJJ when I'm not growing my business. I'm married to an amazing pediatric nurse and have a wild cattle dog pup named Driggs.

What is the most important thing you do for your wellness?
I utilize resistance training and adhere to an organized training plan. Strength is protective over the lifespan and without a plan, you're likely to fall off the wagon sooner.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to others?
Life is suffering. It doesn't matter what you'd like to do in life including work, relationships, fitness, hobbies, etc - it will require some level of suffering. That said, we have to acknowledge life is not perfect. It won't be painless. Knowing that shouldn't make you cower or run from those negative feelings, it should EMPOWER you to know that you have an explicit choice in the matter of how you live your life. From there you can act accordingly.

What is one quote/mantra you live by?
If you have the means to be or do better, you are morally obligated to do so.

Brag on yourself- what is something you are REALLY proud of?
We are changing the way Cincinnati is receiving physical therapy as a whole. We are positively altering the world of medical treatment with our vision to impact male pelvic health as it is a very underserved population. It's also wildly cool to know that our FIRST physical therapist new hire, Dr. Brian Barney, is one of the only black male sports/orthopedics physical therapists in the city of Cincinnati. Our model is different from any other clinic in the city and our level of impact in the community already shows that.

Anything else you'd like to add?
Humans are extremely resilient. Many people come to me seeking help with pain or ailments in a physical sense with feelings of inadequacy or hopelessness. You can actually sometimes see the dimness of hope in someone's eyes if they have chronic pain. My favorite part of my job is that I get to help light that spark back up. So, if you're reading this - you're stronger than you think.
