Falling for Boston: My Surprise Solo Adventure with Pack Up and Go
In a world of constant planning and control, stepping back can be a powerful act of self-care. I recently took this leap on a solo trip with Pack Up and Go, a travel company that plans surprise vacations. As a self-diagnosed control freak, letting go was challenging yet surprisingly freeing. What began as an adventure of anticipation became a journey of wellness, relaxation, and embracing the unknown—something I’ve come to value even more after recently completing my master’s degree.
The Pack Up and Go process couldn’t be easier, and that’s what drew me in. First, you fill out a survey on their website, which captures everything from budget preferences to types of destinations and travel styles. They even let you share specific goals or themes for the trip. In my case, I asked for a destination where I could unwind, explore, eat good, and fully immerse myself in cozy, fall vibes.
After submitting the survey, I received an email letting me know my destination envelope was on its way, adding a thrill of anticipation. The days leading up to my trip were filled with excitement and curiosity. As my departure approached, Pack Up and Go sent useful details: a weather forecast, packing tips, and guidance on airport timing. Not knowing my exact destination meant I could skip the days of meticulous itinerary planning—and that was the true magic!
Travel day finally arrived, and when I opened my envelope at the airport, I was thrilled to see I was headed to Boston—a top fall destination on my bucket list. The best part, Pack Up and Go had no idea! Inside, they included tips for navigating Boston’s 'T' subway system, along with local dining and sightseeing recommendations, making my arrival both exciting and well-prepared.
My accommodation was exactly what I’d hoped for. They booked me into the luxurious Marlowe Kimpton Hotel in Cambridge, MA, where my top-floor room offered stunning views. The hotel’s location was ideal—a short walk from CambridgeSide Mall, nearby museums, parks, and cozy cafes. Pack Up and Go even arranged dinner reservations for two nights, a Salem Witch Trials Tour, and provided Uber credit, giving me the perfect setup to explore at my own pace while feeling wonderfully cared for.
After two days of wandering around beautiful Boston, my long-awaited rainy day in Salem finally arrived. Visiting during Halloween season had always been a dream! Not everything went as planned, as I missed my ferry, but this “setback” led to a spontaneous first train ride, which became a fun little adventure. I eventually joined my tour before wandering off to explore on my own. The highlight was visiting the Hocus Pocus filming locations (amuck, amuck, amuck - iykyk!). I even stepped outside my comfort zone to try Boston’s famous clam chowder, adding a taste of local flavor to the experience.
This trip was more than a getaway—it was a chance to reconnect with myself, release the need to control every detail, and simply be. As women, it’s easy to put off self-care, waiting for the right moment or company. But I encourage you to take the leap—whether with Pack Up and Go or by exploring something on your own. Don’t wait for others to join; go out and live your best life – you only get to do it once.
Traveling solo has always brought me a sense of joy and meaning, and this trip reminded me of the importance of wellness— taking time for myself, embracing new experiences, and letting go of the need to plan every detail. So, here’s to more adventures, more spontaneity, and more moments of unapologetic self-care.
If you’re looking for a way to recharge, I highly recommend booking a surprise adventure with Pack Up and Go. You might just find yourself on a journey you didn’t know you needed!
